How a Simple Cabin Air Filter Led to a Costly Blower Motor

By: Krisdy Riddle

Did you know that something as small as a cabin air
filter can cause big trouble if it’s neglected? It might not seem like much, but that little filter has a big job: keeping the air inside your vehicle clean and flowing freely. At Archers Auto Repair, we recently saw just how costly skipping a simple maintenance item can be.

The Case: What Happened

A customer came in with a vehicle that had weak airflow through the vents and a fan that just wasn’t working like it should. On top of that, they mentioned a musty smell inside the car whenever they turned on the A/C.

When we inspected the vehicle, we found the problem right away… A dirty cabin air filter was completed clogged! All that dirt and debris was forcing the blower motor to work overtime just to push air through. Eventually, the strain burned out the blower motor – turning what could have been a quick, inexpensive filter replacement into a much bigger and expensive repair.

Why A Dirty Cabin Air Filter Causes BIG Problems

The cabin air filter might be small but it plays an important role in your vehicle’s HVAC system.

When it gets clogged:

·      Airflow is restricted, making your heater and
A/C less effective

·      The blower motor has to work harder which can
cause it to overheat and fail

·      Dust, allergens, and unpleasant odors can
circulate in your vehicle

In this case, the filter had been overlooked for far too long and the blower motor ended up paying the price.

Prevention: How Often Should You Change Your Cabin Air Filter?

Most vehicles need a new cabin air filter every 15,000-30,000
miles or once a year… but it depends on where you drive. If you spend a lot of time on dusty roads or areas with heavy pollen, you may need replacements more often.

Here are a few signs it’s time to swap it out:

·      Weak airflow even when the fan is on high

·      Musty or dirty smell when using the heater or A/C

·      Strange noises coming from the fan
